Schools challenge derecognition

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Three educational institutions on Wednesday petitioned the Karnataka High Court against what they claimed is the illegal, illogical and arbitrary action of the authorities in cancelling the registration and recognition of the schools run by them.

The institutions — Millennium Educational Society of Bangalore, Gnana Deepa Academy Educational Trust of Devanahalli and Vinayasri Educational Society of Doddaballapur — had challenged a memo by the authorities cancelling the registration and recognition of the primary schools operated by them.

The institutions said although they had obtained recognition years ago, the jurisdictional Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) on April 19, 2007 issued a memo to them, cancelling the registration and recognition of their schools.

They said the authorities had initiated action to derecognise 2,500 schools while permitting an equal number of schools to continue teaching. They said if the schools were closed, it would become difficult to accommodate the students in other schools.

The petitioners had urged the Karnataka High Court to stay the operation of the memo.

Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri ordered issue of notices to the State and adjourned further hearing on the case.
