TAMBARAM: The Selaiyur police have arrested three women on charges of stealing jewellery and cash from a woman passenger on a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus on Wednesday.
Police said Hamsaveni (40) of Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district was travelling by bus route C 51 between Tambaram and Adyar to get her son Dhanasekar admitted to a school for special children on East Coast Road.
She boarded the bus at East Tambaram and the bus had moved barely some distance, when she noticed that her handbag was cut upon and gold jewellery weighing two sovereigns and Rs.2,000 in cash were missing. Fellow passengers noticed a group of women snatching the bag and passing on the valuables.
Without stopping anywhere, the bus was taken to the Selaiyur police station where the police recovered the valuables from three women. The arrested women — Yasodha, Krishnaveni and Mariammal — belong to Tindivanam, the police said.
