TAMBARAM: The State Highways Department and Southern Railway will be holding a joint meeting on January 12 to review the ongoing road overbridge and subway works in Chennai and its vicinity. Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu is expected to take part in the meeting.

Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan said this during an interaction with reporters after an inspection of several pending projects his department and Southern Railway are executing jointly.

He visited the sites of road over bridges at Alandur, Tambaram, and Tambaram Sanatorium, Pallavaram and a subway at Meenambakkam — projects that should have been completed a few years ago. The most important reason for the delay in completing these projects was problems pertaining to land acquisition, the Minister said , adding that the State Government had framed policies to overcome such problems when they take up projects in the future. The increase in cost of construction materials brought to a halt work on some projects and the department had to prepare fresh estimates.

Problems of design, shifting of lamp posts of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, drinking water pipelines and other utilities that came in the way of building approach walls were the other reasons, Mr. Saminathan said.

On the pathetic condition of rural roads that linked villages with urban pockets such as Tambaram and Pallavaram, he said the Research Wing of the Department was conducting elaborate studies on the ideal surface for these rural roads.

The Minister said Rs.200 crore has been sanctioned by the State Government to carry out repair works on 24,000 km of roads and 64 minor bridges damaged all over the State. Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan was present during the press briefing. Municipal Chairmen R.S.Bharathi and E.Karunanidhi accompanied the Minister.
