TAMBARAM: The distribution of free saris and dhotis to families living below the poverty line commenced in Kancheepuram district on Tuesday. Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan launched the scheme in Alandur in the presence of Kancheepuram Collector Santhosh K Misra.
A total of 8.42 lakh people have been identified as beneficiaries and they would receive the free saris and dhotis through 1,545 fair price shops across the district.
At the function that took place at Ekambaranatha Dabedar Street on Tuesday, the Minister distributed clothes to 1,158 men and women.
Mr. Anbarasan said that compared to the previous occasion, the number of beneficiaries under the scheme increased by 1.15 lakh.
Unlike in the previous regime when saris and dhotis were obtained from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, they were now being procured from Cooptex.
Officials said that among the 8.42-lakh beneficiaries in Kancheepuram district, the maximum number of them were in Tambaram taluk. More than 3.2 lakh beneficiaries belonged to the taluk and they would receive saris and dhotis through 191 fair price shops, officials said.
The distribution process was transparent and was properly streamlined to avoid confusion, they said.
