NEW DELHI: The Union government’s decision to recommend the imposition of President’s Rule in Nagaland was described by the Bharatiya Janata Party as against all political ethics. Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who is also in-charge of political affairs in the State, noted that barely a fortnight was left before the announcement of Assembly elections in the State, and imposition of President’s Rule at this juncture signalled the keenness of the Congress to try and derive some political mileage or “manipulate and influence” the scheduled elections. If the ruling of the Nagaland Assembly Speaker, disqualifying some members under the anti-defection law, was the reason for sacking the Neiphiu Rio government, in which the BJP is a coalition partner, the Central government should have adopted the same principle in the case of Goa, where the Speaker similarly used the law to disqualify three members in a crucial vote on July 30, Mr. Rudy said.
