Hari wins, shares lead

NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna started the New Year with a bang when he trounced fifth seed David Navara of Czech Republic to share the lead with three others after the fourth round of the Reggio Emilia International chess tournament at Reggio Emilia, Italy, on Tuesday.

Seeded third, the Indian dominated the 43-move game before finishing in a clinical manner with a queen and a bishop against the tailender.

A second victory in three rounds has raised Hari’s tally to 2.5 points.

It makes him a joint leader with the three overnight leaders, top-seeded Hungarian Zoltan Almasi, second-seeded Russian Landa Konstantin and fourth-seeded Azerbaijani Vugar Gashimov.

The results (fourth round):

P. Hari Krishna (2.5) bt David Navara (Cze, 1); Konstantin Landa (Rus, 2.5) drew with Zoltan Almasi (Hun, 2.5); Mihail Marin (Rom, 2) drew with Vugar Gashimov (Aze, 2.5); Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 2) bt Michele Godena (Ita, 1); Victor Korchnoi (Sui, 2) drew with Ni Hua (Chn, 2).
