Mathieu enters last eight

ADELAIDE: Second seed Paul-Henri Mathieu fended off big-serving Australian Chris Guccione 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International here on Wednesday.

Frenchman Mathieu looked in real trouble when he lost the first set to Guccione, the runner-up last year, who hammered a total of 24 aces.

But Mathieu bounced back to set up a clash with Australian wildcard entry Joseph Sirianni. Sirianni upset American Sam Querrey 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.

German Benjamin Becker reached his first quarterfinal since September as he eased past American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-4. Becker will play Michael Llodra in the last eight after the Frenchman beat Russian Evgeny Korolev 7-6, 6-3.

Mauresmo advances

At Gold Coast, two-time Grand Slam winner Amelie Mauresmo moved into the quarterfinals of the WTA Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts when she beat fellow Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.
