Chennai: Tamil Nadu Special Police messed up a penalty to end up with a 1-1 draw against Madras Sporting Union in a CFA senior division league match at the Nehru Stadium on Wednesday. The spot kick came in the 30th minute when the MSU goalkeeper Devarajan brought down Bharath Kingsly inside the box. Murugan who took the shot sent the ball to the crosspiece and the opportunity was lost. Murugan, however, made amends later in the 65th minute when he gave a perfect cross for Kanagaraj to head in. But the joy was shortlived as MSU found the equaliser ten minutes later through Venbarasan, after substitute Kamalaharan had done the spade work. Earlier in the first division, Chennai City Police defeated HVF by a solitary goal scored by Sathya. SRM students excel Competitors from SRM Group of institutions secured the top three positions in the Pearl City State-level open chess tournament held at Thuthukudi from December 36 to 30. Over 150 players took part in the tournament. The placings: 1. P. Maheswaran, (SRM Arts & Science College) (7.5/9 points); 2. K.V. Venprakash, (SRM Easwari Engineering College) (7/9); 3. K. The scores (final): Dr. MGR University 150 for nine in 25 overs (Senthil Kumar 47, Vignesh four for 26) lost to Sri Ramachandra University ‘A’ 152 for three in 19.3 overs (Ashok Sigamani 109 not out).
