Striking a sour note

It was a small incident, and it did not add to Kozhikode’s reputation as a city that has always loved and appreciated good music. It happened during a music show featuring playback singers G. Venugopal, Sujatha, Devanand and Shwetha at the Zamorin’s HSS Ground last Sunday.

When Sujatha, who had earlier told the full house that she was delighted to get an opportunity to perform in a city that was known for its love of music, began to sing a melodious composition by Kozhikode’s own M.S. Baburaj, a section of the crowd booed. She was visibly shaken and did not complete the song, much to the disappointment of many in the audience. “The song is one of my all-time favourites and if a crowd reacts like that, I would not be able to sing,” Sujatha later said. The incident was indeed a sour note on an otherwise delightful evening of music.
