ALL SET: Ariyalur Collector V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam giving away uniforms

ARIYALUR: Having undergone rigorous training for a week at the District Sports Complex here, the State athletics and hockey teams are all set for the big challenge — the all-India rural sports meet (group-III) to be held in Haryana from January 5.

The team members, both boys and girls, were chosen based on a selection trial conducted earlier. “Most of them who took part in the trial were extremely talented and it was a tough task choosing the best. We hope the selected lot will emerge victorious,” Regional Senior Manager, Tiruchi-unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, N. Sundaram said.

The athletes were trained by Jayakumar Raja and Lakshminarayanan, while the girls’ hockey team was coached by Rose Fathima. The boys’ team practised under the watchful eyes of Lenin.

“Fitness aspect was given due importance at the camp since it is important for the players to remain injury-free,” Mr. Sundaram said.

At the valediction, Ariyalur Collector V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam gave away jerseys and kits to the youngsters. Deputy General Manager (Administration), Ramco Cements, C. Ravichandran and District Revenue Officer P. Shankar were present.
