SEZs: Goa CPI backs Government’s decision

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: Supporting the Goa Government’s decision to scrap all the special economic zones (SEZs), in response to public agitation, the Goa unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday appealed to the people of the State not to take a stand that Goa did not need industries.

Talking to presspersons here, Christopher Fonseca, general secretary of the CPI unit, congratulated Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for his “bold and forthright decision to do away with SEZs” and sought full support to him from the Union Government to de-notify the SEZs.

He described the SEZs, as envisaged in the SEZ Policy of 2005, as “unconstitutional, exploitative and violative of labour laws and only likely to deliver benefits to land sharks and developers.” However, he appealed to the people and agitators “do not make a mistake to take a stand that Goa does not need industries”. He backed labour intensive and environmentally sustainable industries as suitable for Goa.
