Moment of pride: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh shaking hands with Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the Indian Science Congress in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. ISC president R. Ramamurthi looks on.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The present catchword is all-inclusive growth and the Indian Science Congress should dwell on the subject to help in development of the poor, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said here on Thursday.

“Fruits of science research should not just trickle down but flow to the have-nots and rural folk”, he said while speaking at the 95th Indian Science Congress which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Andhra University campus.

The Chief Minister said the scientists should be appreciated for their role in the development of the country and it was Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision and dynamism that laid a solid foundation for science and technology. Nehru had also said during the 1957 Indian Science Congress that no man or scientist could live in an ivory tower and no one enjoyed monopoly over scientific knowledge which was meant to help the country progress.

Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy noted that due to Nehru’s vision India could enjoy the largest pool of scientists in the world. Later, Dr. Reddy was presented the Indian Science Congress Association president’s gold medal by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University L.Venugopal Reddy in his welcome address said progress without the aid of technology was impossible and the solution to the problem could be green technology and application of environmental sciences to conserve the natural environment and resources.

The challenge being faced by the scientists today was the need to have a more lifecycle-oriented approach in addressing the problem in production and consumption so that recycling and reuse of products was possible thereby reducing the materials and energy use during production and consumption.

President of the Indian Science Congress Association R. Ramamurthi dwelt on the various aspects to be discussed during the congress which is being held with the theme- ‘knowledge-based society using environmentally sustainable science and technology’. ISCA general secretary Abhijit Benerjee proposed a vote of thanks.
