NEW DELHI: Describing the statement by Delhi Power Minister A. K. Walia on constitution of ten-member power committees in all the Delhi Assembly segments as an “election stunt”, Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukhi on Thursday said “if the Power Minister really wants to put a check on private distribution companies then he should forward the report of the Public Accounts Committee, which was unanimously accepted on the floor of House, to the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Central Vigilance Commission for further investigation.” Prof. Mukhi said that since the time of privatisation of distribution of electricity in the Capital he had been drawing the attention of the Government to the poor functioning of these companies, to the harassment of consumers in the name of power theft and as much as 250 per cent increase in the bills. “But despite completion of five years of privatisation, neither the Chief Minister nor Power Minister has given any heed to the shortcomings of these companies,” he said. On the contrary, he added, the Government has protected them by issuing statements in their favour such as “the earlier electro-magnetic meters were slow and now the electronic meters being installed by these companies are right”. The senior BJP leader also questioned the logic behind unannounced load-shedding of one to two hours in the morning and evening all over Delhi. “People want to know from the Power Minister why unannounced power cuts are taking place when Delhi Transco Limited is providing full electricity to the discoms?”
