It will be housed at the Guru Nanak Bhavan Land for theatre activities identified in Kalagrama Bangalore: The last hitch in opening the Bangalore branch of the prestigious National School of Drama has been solved. It is likely to come up at the Guru Nanak Bhavan on Jasma Bhavan Road, here shortly. Giving this information to press persons, I.M.Vittala Murthy, Secretary to Government, Department of Kannada and Culture, explained the delay in starting the branch in the city. Rooms neededThough the Department of Sports and Youth Services had agreed to hand over the theatre in Guru Nanak Bhavan to the institute, it did not want to part with the other rooms in the building as it had several of its offices there. The Kannada and Culture Department had a discussion with the Union Culture Secretary Abhijit Sengupta, a Karnataka cadre IAS officer during his visit to the city ten days ago. Mr. Sengupta had suggested that the entire building should go to the institute, so that the branch could start full-fledged work in the city. Governor notifiedMr. Murthy said that the need of the institute had been brought to the notice of S. Krishna Kumar, adviser to the Governor and he had agreed to oblige the request. Mr. Kumar will place it before the meeting of the executive committee, shortly, for approving the proposal, he added. The NSD, he said, had asked the State Government to provide five acres of land for theatre activities. A piece of land had been identified near Kalagrama. A meeting with the authorities concerned, including the Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor, had been held in this regard. Galleries getting readyMr. Murthy said that the renovation work of the Venkatappa Art Gallery on Kasturba Road was going on. A cafeteria was being re-arranged. The family of the late K.K. Hebbar, noted caricature artist, had come forward to bear the cost of renovation of the K.K. Hebbar Gallery and the work was on. Both would be ready for exhibitions in a month.
