Residents of Koppal oppose land acquisition

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Several residents of Koppal, including C.G. Vijaykumar, have challenged, in Karnataka High Court, the acquisition of their land at Basapur village in Koppal taluk of Koppal district by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

The petitioners said the KIADB had issued a preliminary notification under Section 28 (1) of the KIADB Act on November 19, 2006 for acquiring land at Basapur for industrial purposes. The final notification too was issued although the petitioners, including Mr. Vijaykumar, had filed objections to the acquisition of their lands.

Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri ordered that status quo be maintained.

Five residents of Davangere, including A.V. Sheela, K.C. Umesh, Eshwarappa and two others, have challenged the decision of the Visvesvaraya Technical University (VTU), Belgaum, in seeking to acquire land for the construction of a valuation centre at Davangere.

The petitioners said they belong to the Athani family and are running educational institutions in Davangere. They said they owned 40 acres of land at Kundanwad on the outskirts of Davangere. They said part of this land was sought to be acquired by the VTU for the construction of a valuation centre. They said although another leading educational institution of Davangere had offered its premises to the VTU to house its valuation centre, the university had decided to set up its own campus. They said valuation of answer scripts was only after the students write examination and a building was not needed for such activities.
