MPs from State accused of not being vocal on railway issues

HUBLI: Several pro-Kannada organisations will stage “rail roko” throughout the State on January 27, to protest against the injustice done to Karnataka by the Union Government with regard to various issues.

Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha president Vatal Nagaraj told presspersons here on Thursday that the Statewide agitation would be held under the aegis of “Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samiti”.

Mr. Nagaraj said the agitation was aimed at protesting against the attitude of the Union Government with regard to various demands of Karnataka, including the classical language status to Kannada. He said the “rail roko” would be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and all the trains would be stopped at various railway stations.

Mr. Nagaraj said the successive governments at the Centre had failed to meet the railway demands of the State and sought a White Paper on the funds released for the railway projects in the State by the Centre.

He charged the MPs from the State of failing to raise the railway issues at the Centre. After the agitation, a dharna in front of the official residence of the Prime Minister in New Delhi would be staged in February, he said.

Sa. Ra. Govindu of Dr Rajkumar Abhimanigala Sangha and Kannada Sene State unit president Kumar said that along with their organisations around 700 pro-Kannada organisations would be participating in the agitation.

Mr. Nagaraj said that soon a convention of people from various sections of society would be convened in north Karnataka to press for the implementation of the recommendations of the Nanjundappa Committee on removing regional imbalances.
