BHOPAL: Sidhi district in eastern Madhya Pradesh is being bifurcated to carve out the new Singrauli district, which would include three tehsils—Singrauli, Chitrangi and Deosar. State Principal Secretary (Revenue) Devendra Singhai told The Hindu on Thursday that the process has been initiated to seek public objections and suggestions for the creation of the new district. On being contacted, the Sidhi Collector, Kedar Sharma confirmed the State Government move to divide Sidhi into two districts and said that the Government issues the notification to seek objections to create a new district. He further said that in his capacity as District Collector, he had been involved in a long drawn exercise, which included sending proposals to the Government for the creation of the new district. ‘Major problem’Reacting sharply to this development, the former State Minister and Congress MLA from Churhat in Sidhi district, Ajay Singh, said that the question of division of a district would create major problems. “As far as I am concerned, when the new delimitation of the Assembly constituencies is already in motion, the present exercise to carve out a new district, where a Vidhan Sabha constituency gets bifurcated, would call for close scrutiny”, he added. Singrauli and Chitrangi, two of the three tehsils proposed to be included in the new district, are part of a major coal belt. This coal producing area plays a significant role when it comes to contributing to the economy of Sidhi district.
