TIRUCHI: Anna University–Tiruchi is likely to start two constituent engineering colleges during the coming academic year. Of the seven such colleges it proposed to start in 11 districts earlier this academic year, to make quality education affordable to rural students, the university has decided to go ahead with the college at Panruti in Cuddalore district, offering BE in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronics, electronics and communication, computer science engineering and information technology. With the recent inspection and clearance of the site in Ramanathapuram district by Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran, the process of starting the second college has got off. The other five colleges are to be started in subsequent years in Perambalur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukottai districts. Incidentally, out of the 20 such colleges the Government has planned through the four technical universities, Anna University-Tiruchi has the highest share of seven. While Anna University–Chennai and Anna University–Tirunelveli will start four each, Anna University–Coimbatore will launch five colleges. Before Anna University–Tirunelveli was created, the Tiruchi university had 75 affiliated colleges, the highest. After its creation, the colleges in the southern districts, barring those in Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram, were brought under the jurisdiction of the Tirunelveli university. In the re-distribution, engineering colleges in Theni and Dindigul districts that were hitherto under the jurisdiction of Anna University–Coimbatore were brought under the Anna University- Tiruchi. Officials of the Anna University-Tiruchi expect the number of affiliated colleges in its jurisdiction to go up to 57 from 51 at the start of the next academic year. The university has received applications from registered societies/trusts for starting three colleges. Three more applications are expected in the coming weeks. The applicants are expected to give an undertaking to the All-India Council for Technical Education that they will fulfil the norms pertaining to infrastructure and faculty by August 2008, university sources said.
