This Day That Age
A review of the film trade in South India for 1957, issued by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, says that the year was an important landmark in the film trade. An all-time record number of pictures was certified. The number of studios as well as theatres permanent and touring, was on the increase. The over all collections at the box-office showed an upward trend. “While the industry is thus set to a pace of progress,” says the review, “it is at the same time faced with the threat of short supply position of all the raw materials required for its sustenance. In fact, supplies of raw film are being made against the permits issued by the import controlling authorities.” The review adds, “The total number of pictures censored during the year is 109 compared to 101 in the year 1956. There is a fall in the number of Tamil films while there is a rise in that of Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films. There were 46 Tamil films compared to 50, 36 Telugu films compared to 27, 7 Malayalam films compared to 5, 6 Hindi films compared to 5 of 1956. The number of Kannada films remains stationary, being 14 as during the last year."
