News Analysis
In the lead story “Musharraf to seek Scotland Yard help” (January 3, 2008, page 1), the fourth paragraph was: “‘We reject it on the grounds that we demanded [a Scotland Yard] investigation after the October 18 attack [on the PPP welcome parade for Benazir], and it was accepted by the government, and on the ground that there should be non-association of Pakistani investigators. We do not have any faith in them, because they are the ones who have already destroyed all the evidence,’ said PPP senator Babar Awan.” Nirupama Subramanian clarifies that the sentence should have been “‘We reject it on the grounds that we demanded [a Scotland Yard] investigation after the October 18 attack [on the PPP welcome parade for Benazir], and it was not accepted by the government …,’ said PPP senator Babar Awan.” The Guardian in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column (January 3, 2008) says: “George V did not marry an English woman in 1923 as we said in an interview with the historian David Starkey. In that year his son, the future George VI, married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon who, though born in England, came from a Scottish family. The quote: ‘When I hear the word culture I reach for my revolver,’ is usually attributed to Goering, not Goebbels (‘The Queen and I’, page 27, and ‘Queen is poorly educated and philistine, says Starkey’, page 1, December 22).” There was a reference to this in an article by The Hindu’s London correspondent titled “Historian assails Queen Elizabeth” (“Newscape” page, December 24, 2007). The first paragraph in the article was: “Living up to his reputation as the ‘rudest man in Britain,’ one of the country’s leading historians of British monarchy [David Starkey] has dispensed with Christmas cheer to launch an astonishing attack on the Queen. He called her a ‘philistine’ whose approach to culture, he said, reminded him of Goebbels’ remark: ‘Every time I hear the word culture, I reach for my revolver.’” The second paragraph in a Kolkata report “CPI(M) worker shot dead” (January 3, 2008) was: “A group of 10 to 12 Maoists crossed over into Jharkhand and shot dead 42-year-old Palhan Majhi, said Raj Kanojia, Inspector-General (Law and Order) ….” It should have been “crossed over from Jharkhand”. In a report “Poll official arrives” (City edition – Bangalore, January 3, 2007, page 4), the name of State Chief Electoral Officer R. Ramaseshan was misspelt as R. Ramseshan. A Pudukottai report headlined “He is extremely happy with his role as an actor whose aim is to make people laugh” (Tamil Nadu, January 3, 2008) did not have the name of the actor. (The report was on his visit to Pudukottai town.) His name is Bayilvan Ranganathan. It was an editing error. The report that appeared in the Tiruchirapalli edition of The Hindu (“Happy with making people laugh”, January 3, 2008, page 2) had the name. A sentence in a report “Erode Corporation inaugurated” (Tamil Nadu, December 30, 2007, page 8) was: “Recalling the government’s achievements over the past one and a half years, he [Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi] said so far, 1.60 acres of land had been given to 1,37,925 farmers and 2,50,000 pattas distributed to as many people.” It was a reporting error and should have been “1.60 lakh acres of land”. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
