Modi to be felicitated

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party is quite clear who will be the party’s star campaigner in the Assembly elections scheduled for 2009 — Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. In preparation for that, the party’s city unit will publicly felicitate him on January 20 for his recent electoralvictory in Gujarat.

President of the city unit Prakash Mehta said the party’s national general secretary, Gopinath Munde, would felicitate Mr. Modi at Shivaji Park. “Gujarat and Maharashtra have a unique relationship and that is why we are honouring him,” said Mr. Mehta. In 2003, Mr. Modi was felicitated here after his victory. In October 2007, Mr. Modi was felicitated as the “best Chief Minister” by the Vande Mataram Foundation at Shanmukhananda Hall here. Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeraywill not be among those present on January 20.

Sources in the party said Mr. Modi would be visiting Chennai at the invitation of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for Pongal next week.
