India to head Kimberley Process

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: India will head the prestigious Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in 2008 that ensures growth of legitimate diamond trade by certifying the origin of rough diamonds from sources and ensuring that they are ‘conflict free’.

Comprising 74 nations, including the European Union, KPCS requires each participant to impose internal controls over production and trade of rough diamonds. Trading in rough diamonds with a non-participant is not allowed.

All exports of rough diamonds have to be accompanied by a valid KP certificate. stating that the diamonds are conflict free.
