Thomas guides WI to big win

HYDERABAD: Aveneo Thomas scored an unbeaten 111 to guide West Indies to a 135-run win over England in the Lawyers’ World Cup cricket tournament here on Thursday.

The scores: India 248 for five (Rajesh Singh 84, Aditya Kumar 56) bt Pakistan 168 for nine (Safdar Ali 49).

West Indies 309 for two (Welch 49, Aveneo Thomas 111 not out, Shivanand 59 not out) bt England 174 for nine (Gullick 64).

Sri Lanka 187 bt Australia 167 for nine (Martin 41).

Neharika in semifinals

R. Neharika beat Hanisha Vasi Reddy 6-3 in the girls’ under-10 quarterfinals of the Pioneer Tennis Academy’s open tournament here on Thursday.

The results (quarterfinals):

Girls under-10: R. Neharika bt Hanisha Vasi Reddy 6-3; Sai Navya bt S. Nidhi 6-1; M. Shivani bt S. Sowmya 6-0.

Boys under-10:

Taha Kapadia bt A. Rahul 6-0; M. Sri Jitesh Swamy bt Jai Sachdev 6-2; Srirang Sathyan bt Rathod Sai Raj 6-1; Mohd Taquiuddin bt T. Sahith Rao 6-4.

Gatorade’s talent hunt

A pace bowling talent hunt will be conducted by Gatorade at the Gymkhana grounds here on Friday. The participants will be judged by T.A. Sekar, chief coach, MRF Pace Foundation.

The two best bowlers from Hyderabad will be selected in the under-15 and under-22 categories and will take part in the Chennai regional round.

Natl. series tennis

The LANCO JHIC all-India ranking National series tennis tournament for boys and girls under-16 will be conducted at JHIC from January 7 to 12. The sign-in for the qualifiers for boys is on January 4 and for girls the next day. Players may report at JHIC between noon and 2 p.m. The main draw for boys starts on Jan. 7 and the girls the next day.

Ball badminton trials

The Hyderabad District Ball Badminton Association will conduct selection trials for men and women at YMCA (Narayanguda) on January 5 at 7 a.m. to pick its team for the senior State inter-district meet. Call V. Tandava Krishna (98481-20853) for details.
