Shooting
AHMEDABAD: Kuheli Gangulee raised the bar in the women’s 50m sports rifle prone event when she shot a good 592 out of 600 to win the gold medal in the National shooting championship here on Thursday. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) shooter had failed to make it to the Indian team for the Asian championship in Kuwait last month, but Kuheli fired with purpose to take the only medal at stake on the sixth day of Nationals at the Ahmedabad Rifle Club here. Kuheli started with a 100 in her first round and then fired s series of 99, 98, 98, 98, 99 to threaten the long-standing National record held by Roopa Unnikrishnan (593) set in 1998, in Delhi. Army women took the silver and bronze medals while Meena Kumar (591) finishing behind Kuheli. D.V.S. Lakshmi Priya (590) settled for the bronze medal as they pushed the more established shooters out of the podium. Anjali sixthAnjali Bhagwat, who competed in the MQS event in Kuwait and shot 580 there, improved her score to 586 to finish sixth. Army won the team event by a distance as the trio of Birmati, Meena Kumari and Raj Kumari posted a total of 1765 out of 1800. The junior shooters, Lajja Gauswami, Hema K. C. and Meena Kumari, representing NCC, finished with silver medal with a total of 1744, while Anjali-led Maharashtra settled for the bronze medal.
