It has been instituted by US-based Odissi dancer The event is hosted by Sruti cultural organisation BHUBANESWAR: City-based young and promising male Odissi dancer Pabitra Kumar Pradhan was presented the Sanjukta Prativa Samman here on Thursday during the inaugural evening of the three-day Odissi music festival being hosted by Bhubaneswar-based Sruti cultural organisation. The award has been instituted by US-based Odissi dancer and founder-director of Nrityalaya in Washington Chitra Krishnamurty in memory of legendary danseuse Sanjukta Panigrahi. Sanjukta’s husband and eminent musician Raghunath Panigrahi presented the award and inaugurated the event along with Bhubaneswar Development Agency Vice-Chairperson and singer Arun Kumar Panda. ‘Sruti’ founder-secretary and popular Odissi vocalist Bijay Kumar Jena informed that the festival, in its third year now, was launched to promote and popularise Odissi music that is still struggling for a classical status at the national- level. The inaugural evening kicked off with recital of 12th century saint poet Jayadev’s Geet Gobind by noted vocalist and composer Ramahari Das followed by Odissi vocal recital by Mitali Chinara. Well-known flutist Mohini Mohan Patnaik and Mardal percussionist Kalandi Charan Parida also performed. Awardee dancer Mr. Pradhan also performed. Versatile violinist Dayanidhi Behera would be conferred the Pandit Bhubaneswar Mishra Memorial Award for 2007 on Friday. The award has been instituted by ‘Shruti’ as homage to the late legendary music composer of the State. The concluding evening on Sunday would feature singers of light Oriya music. The singers would include Ramahari Das, Keshab Rout, Laxmikant Palit, Minati Bhanja, Mitali Chinara, Sangeeta Gosain, Lata Ghose, Suchitra Mohapatra, Sourav Nayak, Haripriya Swain, Bijay Kumar Jena and Arun Kumar Panda, the senior IAS officer.
