JAIPUR: Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje returned to the State Capital on Thursday after her New Year holiday amid reports that she is piqued over the choice of Om Mathur as the new president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan. In fact, the news heralding the arrival of Mr. Mathur, an RSS strongman, replacing Mahesh Sharma on New Year’s Day was said to be a surprise to her as well, according to party sources here. Ms. Raje returned along with Dr. Sharma, who too had gone to Delhi to meet leaders. Mr. Mathur, who was in his home district Pali the other day, was given a rousing welcome by BJP men in Jodhpur on Thursday. He is expected to reach Jaipur on Saturday. ‘Unilateral decision’Though it was initially believed that Ms. Raje’s concurrence had been taken by party president Rajnath Singh in the choice of Mr. Mathur, BJP general secretary in charge of Gujarat, it is realised that the leadership announced the name unilaterally without receiving clearance from her. This has reportedly angered senior party leader L. K. Advani as well. It was Mr. Advani who had saved Dr. Sharma when the demand from the dissidents for removal of the latter had reached a crescendo in November. Mr. Advani had asked the rebels to come out with specific charges against Dr. Sharma, if they had any. Ms. Raje, who met Mr. Advani in Delhi along with Dr. Sharma, raised the Brahmin angle to the leadership change. The Chief Minister, who had been basically opposed to replacing Dr. Sharma, had conceded the demand from the dissidents in the party on condition that a leader from the same community would replace him. According to sources here, the party leadership had asked Ms. Raje to suggest a replacement for Dr. Sharma. Her choice, Mines Minister Laxminarain Dave, was rejected on the ground of lacking in calibre.
