KOCHI: The diamond jubilee celebrations of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi, will be inaugurated on Friday. Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar will inaugurate the celebrations at the institute at 2.50 p.m. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma will be the chief guest. Sebastian Paul, MP; K.V. Thomas, MLA; Mayor Mercy Williams; Mangala Rai, Director of the Indian Council for Agriculture Research; Mohan Joseph Modayil, member of the Agriculture Scientist Recruitment Board; and N.G.K. Pillai, director of the institute, will participate. Research vesselMr. Pawar will also be the chief guest at the launch of Matsyakumari II, a fisheries research vessel built by the Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation for the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. His wife, Prathibha Pawar, will name the vessel and launch it, at a function to be held at the Thoppumpady yard of the corporation on Friday evening. The corporation bagged the order in a global competition. The 17.5-metre-long vessel is fitted with a 325-HP diesel engine, imported gearbox, hydraulic steering with autopilot and a blast freezer of 150-kg capacity. It can remain at sea for nine days with 12 people on board.
