‘Revoke licenses of banks using force’
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: The Government should revoke the license issued to the banks which use force to recover loan amounts from farmers, said Mohan Dharia, chairman of the Confederation of NGOs of Rural India (CNRI).
Speaking after inaugurating Bharat Vikas Yatra in Bangalore to create awareness on rural development plans, he advised farmers not to commit suicide but defeat oppressive financial institutions and the “nexus of power and money” through democratic processes.
“If a whole village is united, what can any anti-social element do?” he asked. It was self-respect and shame of not being able to repay loans that was driving farmers to suicide and the political system had failed to understand this, he said.
He said that various organisations of farmers had met earlier at Pune and resolved to launch an agitation from January 26 if all loans given to dry land farmers are not waived immediately.
L.V. Saptharishi, co-chairperson of CNRI, said that the organisation with 6,000 affiliated non-governmental organisations was working towards “concretising the meaning of inclusive growth.”
