KOCHI: Efforts to begin work on the metro rail project here has gathered momentum with District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish stating that land acquisition for the project will be completed within seven months. About 15 hectares of land will have to be acquired. Mr. Hanish told presspersons here on Wednesday that arrangements were in place for launching the acquisition process. A team led by the tahsildar T.K. Baby would be in charge. The Collector said he had directed secretaries of local self-government bodies to permit construction in the project area subject to his no-objection certificate only. Registrars had been directed to keep an eye on land transactions in the area. He said that at an initial estimate, between Rs. 75 crore and Rs. 100 crore would be required for the acquisition process. Landowners could raise their objections and give appeals once the land price was fixed. As soon as a joint inspection of the project area by officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Revenue Department was completed, land survey would be started. On completion of the survey, the sketch of the land would be handed over to the survey superintendent for approval. The acquisition process, proposed under the urgency clause, would be launched subject to his approval.
