Parliamentary sub-committee members attend meeting

KOCHI: The Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Rehabilitation of Tsunami-affected Persons on Friday urged the State government to expeditiously complete the various projects conceived for the victims of the disaster.

V. Narayanaswamy, Rajya Sabha member and convener of the sub-committee, and Amitabh Nandi, Lok Sabha member and member of the committee, attended the review meeting held at the Ernakulam guest house to evaluate the progress of various projects in the tsunami-hit areas of the State.

Fisheries Minister S. Sarma represented the State government. K. Chandran Pillai, MP; Nivedita P. Haran, Principal Secretary, Revenue; District Collectors of Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kollam; and other senior officials involved in the implementation of the projects participated.

Mr. Narayanaswamy told presspersons that a target had been fixed for the completion of various tsunami-related projects and the State government should live up to achieve that target.

He asked the government to be prepared and competent to face future challenges in the tsunami-affected regions. During the course of the meeting, Ms. Haran explained the steps taken by the State government for the rehabilitation of the affected people. The sub-committee members aired their apprehensions and the officials explained the facts to assuage those concerns.

No diversion

Mr. Sarma reassured the committee that the tsunami funds would not be diverted for other purposes.

Mr. Narayanaswamy declined to reveal the discussions at the review meeting, stating that the report would be tabled in Parliament.
