Pazhavanthangal residents confront officials

TAMBARAM: Distribution of free saris and dhotis was suspended at a fair price shop in Pazhavanthangal on Thursday when residents confronted the officials alleging that eligible cardholders were deprived of the benefits. The distribution of free saris and dhotis for the ‘Pongal’ festival to ration cardholders living below the poverty line was launched in Kancheepuram district a few days ago. On Thursday, dozens of ration cardholders assembled near the fair price shop on M.G.R. Road, Pazhavanthangal.

Officials of the Civil Supplies and Revenue Departments were overwhelmed by the turnout of the residents and asked them to collect the clothes in batches of 100 each everyday. However, the cardholders insisted that they would leave after all of them collected the clothes.

The officials told the residents that there were 440 cardholders eligible to receive the clothes and assured them that none would be left out. As the government had issued guidelines to distribute the clothes in batches of 100 each, they requested a section of the residents to return later in the evening or on Friday.

When the residents did not budge, the officials closed down the shop. . Senior officials of the Kancheepuram district administration said that all families living below the poverty line possessing ration cards were eligible to receive the free sari and dhoti.

As they had to reach out to 3.2 lakh cardholders in Tambaram taluk through 191 fair price shops, the officials had a huge target to meet. Stating that there was no need for cardholders to panic, the officials said the process of receiving the clothes was as easy as getting other essential commodities from the shops.

It was mandatory for a village administrative officer to be present during the distribution but in Tambaram taluk, there were only about 40 VAOs and it was not possible for these staff to be present in the all shops. Hence, they were deploying the VAOs on rotation, they said, appealing to cardholders to cooperate with the official machinery. The incident on Thursday was only owing to panic reaction.
