New medical college in Adilabad soon

S. Harpal Singh

January 9 is the tentative date on which the bhoomi puja will be done

ADILABAD: One of the best developments that could have taken place in Adilabad district has started taking shape behind the government headquarters hospital here. The new medical college will be a reality in a few months from now as work on construction of buildings to house it has commenced.

Bhoomi puja

January 9 is the tentative date on which the bhoomi puja will be done at the site signalling a formal start to the work. Well-known personalities like MLAs from the district will be roped in for the ceremony, according to sources.

Like the other two medical colleges in the State that were sanctioned along with it, the one here will be also be known as Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad. It will come up in an extent that is above 30 acres abutting both sides of the NH 7 in the premises that originally belonged to the headquarters hospital.

The medical college will start functioning from the coming academic year and the admissions will be limited to 100 students initially. In due course the RIMS, Adilabad will see all regular departments functioning in it.

Dr. Radha Nair, District Coordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) and in-charge superintendent of the headquarters hospital says the facility will not just benefit students. The teaching hospital will also be beneficial to local people, especially the poor.

Salary to faculty

There was some apprehension about faculty willing to teach in the new college because of the pay structure. However, the government is trying to make the hospital a semi-autonomous institution so that higher salaries on the lines of corporate colleges can be offered to the teaching staff.

Based on experience, the faculty members in private and corporate colleges are paid a minimum of Rs. 50,000 per month.

In government-owned colleges, the salaries are generally lower.
