Varsity asks MUTA to change its name

“Its members are not university teachers and the name is not proper and misleading”

MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University would initiate legal action if the name, Madurai Kamaraj University Teachers’ Association (MUTA), was not changed immediately, Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu said here on Thursday.

“Office-bearers of MUTA have to consider changing the name to Madurai Kamaraj University Affiliated Colleges Teachers’ Association. Its members are not university teachers and hence the current name is not proper and misleading too,” he said at a press conference.

Stating that the varsity professors had a separate association and they should not be linked to activities of the MUTA, he said that the university, if required, might move the court on this issue.

Dr. Maruthamuthu refuted the criticism made in certain quarters on whether the university had the concurrence of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for offering industry-integrated business management courses in association with the National Institute of Applied Management (NIAM), New Delhi. “The approval of UGC is not required because the courses are offered only by the university and NIAM is just a nodal agency. Since the courses are regular and offered through recognised institutions, the varsity does not require any permission.” He said that objections over tie-up with NIAM were unwarranted as no complaint had been made by any student undergoing those courses.

Paper valuation

The Controller of Examinations, S. Shanmugiah, told reporters that answer-script valuation had been streamlined and completed in time for the convenience of students.

Valuation of November semester examination papers was an example because nearly 5.5 lakh answer scripts were corrected and the results published by December 31. “This was done a week ahead compared to last year,” he added.

PR. Athappan, Dean (Industrial Consultancy), said that the university was toying with a proposal of introducing e-learning and online examinations in distance education stream in a phased manner.
