CPI(M) to initiate steps for front at national, State level

Party will oppose communal forces, Centre’s economic policies: Varadarajan

CHENNAI: “The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will initiate steps to form a front both at the national and State level to mobilise forces against communalism and economic liberalism and the party’s future move will be in that direction,” said State secretary of the party N. Varadarajan here on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Varadarajan said in the last general elections, the party played a key role in removing communal forces from power at the Centre. In the next general elections, the party would oppose both communal forces and the liberalised economic policies of the Centre.

Deliberations at the party’s 19th State conference, to be held in Madurai from January 8 to 10, and the six-day 19th national conference in Coimbatore from March 29, would focus on this issue and formulate a suitable strategy. Party’s general secretary Prakash Karat would attend the conferences.

Mr. Varadarajan said the party would also mobilise people against “wrong policies of the Congress-led United Progressive Government at the Centre,” which were responsible for steep increase in prices of essential commodities.

According to the Arjun Sengupta Committee, appointed by the Centre, nearly 70 per cent of the people in the country were surviving on just Rs. 20 a day. The Centre had failed to implement the recommendations of the M.S. Swaminathan Committee report on agriculture reforms, he said.

He said while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government was honouring its poll promises, it was not effective in implementing land reforms. There was slackness in the distribution of waste land to landless agriculturists. The Government should take over waste land and distribute it to agriculturists.

Patta distribution

In house site patta distribution, people occupying ‘porampoke’ land for decades should not be evicted on the pretext that they were occupying water bodies.

The Government should hold early elections to cooperative bodies and take stern measures to eradicate untouchability.

Mr. Varadarajan wanted the Centre and State to be firm in implementing the Sethusamduram project, which would pave the way for industrialisation of southern districts and employment opportunities for thousands. Communal forces should not be allowed to sabotage the dream project.

The CPI(M) was not against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh participating in the Sri Lankan independence day celebrations. The country should have cordial relations with neighbours. Only political solution would solve the ethnic crisis and not an armed struggle.

Asked about the party’s stand on the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Mr. Varadarajan said the DMDK had not spelt out its policies clearly.

In the case of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, its attitude on various public issues was in consonance with that of the CPI(M).
