No leads in Rampur attack investigation

A few persons were questioned but none detained, say police

A CRPF constable was picked up for questioning

Police refused to confirm this

LUCKNOW: The investigating agencies were yet to get specific leads and establish the local link in Tuesday’s terrorist attack on the Central Reserve Police Force Group Centre in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, official sources said here on Thursday. The pre-dawn attack claimed the lives of eight persons, including seven CRPF jawans.

There were reports that a CRPF constable, ostensibly sleeping in control room number two of the Group Centre when the attack took place, was picked up for questioning. But this was not confirmed by the sources. Belonging to the 16 Battalion of the CRPF deployed in the Kashmir Valley, the constable was reportedly on deputation to the Centre.

While the CRPF remained silent on the issue, Special Secretary in the State Home Department Manju Chandra said here that the department had no knowledge of the reported detention.

The Home official said the outcome of the questioning could not be disclosed.

Rampur Superintendent of Police Sanjiv Gupta also denied the report.

“No specific leads have come the way of the police and investigating agencies which could establish the terror linkage. A few persons have been questioned, but nobody has been detained,” Dr. Gupta told The Hindu from Rampur.

IG, CRPF, Karamveer Singh was monitoring the investigations by the force. The Special Task Force and Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) have been pressed into service by the Uttar Pradesh government.

The Rampur police chief confirmed that the STF and ATS were coordinating with the local police.

Notwithstanding the suspicion of the State police and the investigating agencies that the attack may have been executed by the Lashkar-e-Taiba, no terror organisation has claimed responsibility.
