Sydney: V.V.S. Laxman refused to rate his third century in three matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground, saying he was pleased he had done the job required of him under pressure.

“It’s always a special feeling going back to a place where you have scored a hundred,” said Laxman after making 109, adding to earlier scores here of 167 and 178. “It gives you confidence, you know the conditions, and today I just played on the merit of the ball. It’s satisfying to do well against the best.”

Asked about his 175-run partnership (11th century stand) with Rahul Dravid, Laxman said, “It was important to not lose a wicket after Wasim, and that’s what we concentrated on. I was very pleased for Rahul when he got to his 50 because it was a fighting innings, He wasn’t timing the ball very well, but to still score 50 shows his character. It was a gutsy innings because they bowled very well to him. He also got better in the innings, he began timing the ball the last 20-30 runs.”

Known as a maker of big innings, Laxman said he was disappointed getting out when he did, for Dravid had been dismissed in the previous over. “I was beaten in flight, it was an error of judging length,” said the 33-year-old.

Laxman said the SCG track had played true, and that Friday’s first session was crucial. “The match is evenly balanced, and if Sachin (Tendulkar) and Sourav (Ganguly) can start on a high, we will be able to put pressure on the Australians.”
