Delhi continues to shiver

Staff Reporter

Cold wave conditions likely to abate by weekend

NEW DELHI: After the mercury plummeted to a chilling 1.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, there was hardly any relief on Thursday with the minimum temperature settling at 2 degrees Celsius.

While the chill left Delhiites shivering, several domestic flights ran behind schedule by 15 minutes to over three hours on Thursday morning owing to low visibility conditions at Delhi airport.

Not just Delhi, many parts of North India too have been reeling under cold wave conditions for the past three days with the minimum temperature remaining four to seven degrees below normal.

According to the Meteorological Department, occurrence of such conditions is not uncommon over North India as every year these parts experience a few epochs of below normal temperatures. These epochs are primarily governed by the winds blowing into the region from colder areas to the North and North-West of the country.

Western disturbance

“A western disturbance affected the extreme northern parts of the country during last December 20 to December 22. After the eastward movement of this disturbance, cold dry northerly winds set in over the region leading to gradual fall in night temperatures. The minimum temperatures fell by about 10 degrees Celsius over most parts of the region during December 23 to January 2,” said Regional Meteorological Centre director S. C. Bhan in a statement.

The coming week, however, has something to cheer about as the weatherman has forecast a fresh western disturbance across the Northern parts of the country from January 5 due to which the wind pattern is likely to be reversed leading to incursion of warm air mass into the region. Subsequently the cold wave conditions prevailing over the region are likely to abate by the end of this week.
