IN LIMELIGHT: The mounted police headquarters in Mysore which got permanent illumination to shore up its heritage value.

MYSORE: For a city that takes pride in its heritage structures and monuments most of which have permanent illumination, the latest to join this illustrious list is the office of the Commandant Mounted Company, which houses the mounted police unit of the Karnataka Armed Reserve Police.

Located on the Lalith Mahal Road and opposite the Karanji Nature Park enroute to Chamundi Hills, this heritage building is the chip of the old block and draws instant attention for those with a penchant to discern the banal from the sublime.

And this heritage building got a permanent illumination, which was launched at an impressive ceremony in the gathering of senior police officials including the former Commissioner Bhaskar Rao, the present Commissioner Dr. P.Ravindranath among others.

Interestingly, Mysore police is among the very few in the world which maintains a mounted police unit that infuses a semblance of majesty in the city of palaces but is useful in crowd control. The Mysore unit of the mounted police came into effect in 1952 and was constituted out of the non-Indian State forces which used to serve the royal family.
