NEW DELHI: Two young men have been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on charges of killing the chief of the Manipur-based rebel outfit, Kuki Revolutionary Army, at Ashram here last November. According to the police, the murder was fall-out of a financial dispute between the Kuki head and the banned outfit United National Liberation Front.

Khuplam Hangshing, who was unwell, had been living in a Hari Nagar house with his brother David. On November 11 last year, about a dozen people forced their way into their flat and bludgeoned him to death. The police found that Hangshing was a “self-proclaimed” KRA chief that was formed in December 1999 with the support of the NCSN. The assailants also took away a laptop and three mobile phones. The Special Cell took over the case and came across evidence leading to two persons, one of whom was arrested in Jalandhar on December 12.

He was identified as Malkit Singh. On his disclosure, the police arrested Wahengbam Thoithoiba Meitei in Chandigarh. One of the stolen mobile phones was seized from him. During interrogation, the accused revealed that Hangshing was murdered at the behest of UNLF over a dispute regarding collection of extortion money. Meitei was directed to rope in a non-Manipuri to evade detection. On way to the Capital, he met Malkit when the latter was going from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand to Chandigarh.

He offered Malkit money for helping him and his cousin eliminate their rival Hangshing. Malkit got down in the Capital on November 7 and stayed with Tombi Singh and his accomplices.

On November 11 night, 10 people entered the third floor flat of the victim, tied the hands and legs of the occupants and after identifying Hangshing took him to another room and bludgeoned him to death.

Before fleeing, Tombi and one of his accomplices identified themselves as commandos of the Manipur Combined Force.
