TRADITIONAL START: Heart surgeon Dr. Vivek Jawali inaugurating the Pragathi Youth Festival in Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College in Gulbarga on Friday. GULBARGA: The fifth edition of the two-day Pragathi youth festival for college students got off to a colourful start at the Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College with the participation of over 1,000 college students Heart surgeon Vivek Jawali inaugurated the festival by beating the “Nagari” (drum). An alumnus of Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College, Dr. Jawali termed his entry into the field of medicine as an accident. “I wanted to become an artist and got an admission in the J.J. School of Arts in Mumbai after completing Pre-University Course. But my father wanted me to join MBBS,” he said. Dr. Jawali said that a few years ago, career options for students were limited. Now, with rapid progress in science and technology, plenty of jobs were available for them. The use of GENOME project in various fields and the advent of nanotechnology had opened up new avenues for youths, he said. Dr. Jawali said that youths should accept the opportunities that come in their way and try to mould their career using them. Chairman of the Organising Committee and Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey said that competitions for junior college and degree/post-graduate students would be held separately. For junior college students, competitions such as essay, elocution, AD-ZAP, quiz in literary events, singing and dance competitions, mono acting, fancy dress, rangoli and painting would be held. Students pursuing degree courses would have more number of contests in all the three events. The literary events included essay, debate, AD-ZAP, quiz, extempore, poetry versification and group discussions. Hyderabad-Karnataka Education Society president Basavaraj Bhimalli welcomed the gathering.
