Students seek centre for postgraduate studies

For a cause: Students staging a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Chitradurga on Friday.

Chitradurga: Demanding allotment of land for constructing a separate building for a postgraduate centre, students and members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday.

In a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas, NSUI district unit president U. Lakshmi Kanth said NSUI had been demanding a separate building for the past four years.

Promise

During his tenure, the former district in-charge Minister Basavaraj Horatti had given consent for the building and the Hampi University had agreed to grant Rs. 50 lakh for the purpose. Elected representatives from the region had promised to share the remaining costs if the land was given, he said.

Mr. Lakshmi Kanth said that because of non-allocation of land, construction work could not commence, and hence students had to study in the Government Degree College where postgraduate courses were being conducted at present. He urged the Government to grant at least 100 acres of land near the city.

Mr. Lakshmi Kanth said such land was available at Guddarangavvanahalli, with over 400 acres belonging to the Department of Forests near Challakere and 250 acres near Hiriyur town. The land in any of the areas could be allotted for the building, he said.

He said 180 students were pursuing postgraduate studies in the Government Degree College. As there was likelihood of more students being admitted to the courses, a separate building was needed.

Referring to the hostel, he said a large number of students were from taluk areas and they did not have hostel facilities. He urged the Government to build a hostel immediately.

With regard to commencement of diploma courses, he said that although the Government had approved a diploma college this year, but because of lack of a building, admissions could not be held.

Mr. Lakshmi Kanth urged the Government to take steps to identify land for a building so that the diploma courses could be started. He expressed regret over the withdrawal of the Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) course for want of infrastructure in the district. He said the Deputy Commissioner had promised that arrangements would be made within one month. “We will call for a Chitradurga bandh if the promise is not kept,” he said.

NSUI city unit president R. Krishnamurthy and district vice-president Vikram Raghu Nayak was present.
