Call to encourage regional sports

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: MP Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, Bijapur MP, on Friday called upon governmental and private organisations to encourage regional sports such as kho-kho and kabadi. Inaugurating a four-day national-level high school kho-kho tournament at the district stadium here, Mr. Yatnal regretted that indigenous sports had been eclipsed by games like cricket which originated in Western countries.

G.K. Patil, MLC, said that kho-kho and kabadi could be recognised as international sports if proper encouragement and publicity were given. These games required tremendous stamina, agility and skill, he said.

Chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat and Deputy Commissioner in-charge D.B. Naik, zilla panchayat president Sangeetha Dinni and vice-president Babusahukar Metri were present.

Over 500 students from 18 States are taking part in the tournament.
