Mobile HIV counselling van to hit Namakkal roads
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: A mobile Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) is launched in Namakkal district to extend HIV counselling and testing services to people living in remote villages, particularly the tribal population in Kolli Hills.
The vehicle has a HIV test kit, refrigerator, a counselling room, television and VCD player. Many people living in the villages hesitate to come out to seek voluntary HIV testing due to the stigma attached to the disease. The mobile unit will enable the health department to provide testing services to such people, Deputy Director of Health R. Sampathkumar said.
The public health department had drawn up a day-to-day plan to cover all the tribal and remote villages in the district. Blood samples would be taken and the results would be handed over to the persons immediately.
Those who tested positive would be given counselling in the vehicle itself. A counsellor would be deputed in the vehicle for this purpose. Videos and short films about the medical aids extended to the HIV positive people would be screened to boost the confidence level of persons who tested positive.
Blood test
The mobile ICTC would be more beneficial to the anti-natal mothers in remote villages.
They would not have to take troubles by travelling to the primary health centres for testing, officials said.
