BHUBANESWAR: Even as the situation continued to remain tense in communal violence-hit Kandhamal district, the State Government on Monday decided to convene a meeting of the State level committee on communal harmony on January 9. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting that was held at the State Secretariat to review the Kandhamal situation. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik chaired the meeting. Addressing the meeting, Mr. Patnaik stressed the need to further activate the peace committees in Kandhamal to restore communal harmony and peace in the violence-hit district. As many as 99 cases had been registered and 104 persons had been arrested in Kandhamal for their involvement in the violence by Friday, the government said. The Chief Minister also ordered that all those involved in the violence should be taken to task irrespective of their caste and religion. Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda, Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Patnaik and other officials concerned attended the meeting.
