Power production is still badly affected
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The demand for power far exceeding the supply, frequency at the Northern Grid plunged below the mandatory 48.8 Hz a total of 31 times on Friday. With the supply of gas for the production of power still badly affected, power generation here in the Capital remains on the decline.
“Frequency dipped about 31 times on Friday. To prevent any grid collapse, rotational load shedding of about 250 MW was carried out. But arrangements are being made to meet the demand for power,” said a senior official of the Power Department.
Grid indiscipline
He said despite the word of caution, many States continued to show grid indiscipline. “Many States including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal have been overdrawing from the Northern Grid; this puts the Grid at risk.” To make up for the power shortage in the Capital, more power has been arranged from the eastern States by BSES and Anta, Auriya and Dadri plants, said Power Department officials.
“We are expecting the conditions to improve by later on Friday night. With Sunday being a holiday, the pressure on the system will further ease off,” they said.
Among the States that overdrew from the Northern Grid, Haryana overdrew 222 MW and Rajasthan overdrew 272 MW.
Delhi has been facing a decline in power generation for the past few days owing to the shutting down of an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation gas platform. On Friday, the total power generation stood at 1113 MW while the maximum load on the system was recorded at 3086 MW.
