‘Government opposed to conversion of estates’

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said here on Friday that the State government opposed the legislation passed during the UDF government allowing plantations to use five per cent of their estates for tourism.

It was also not in favour of switching of crops. The Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill, which was awaiting assent of the President, allowed for cultivation of cashew, vanilla, medicinal plants and other crops in estate areas, thus diluting the provisions of the Land Reforms Act. The government had communicated to the Centre that it was opposed to the provisions of the Bill.

The Minister was talking to presspersons after releasing the draft land policy.
