Elephant, bisons found dead

Staff Reporter

VALPARAI: A just-born elephant calf and a six-year-old female bison were found dead at two different places near here on Thursday.

Forest department officials said that the elephant calf, born a day or two ago, died after slipping from a sloppy rock inside the reserved forests, near Kavarkkal estate. Post-mortem examination was conducted on Friday.

The female bison was found dead in the forests near Villoni estate.

Carcass found

The carcass of a gaur (bison) was found at an isolated spot near an incomplete building in Udhagamandalam on Friday.

People residing in the vicinity said that though bisons have of late become a common sight in tea gardens adjoining forests particularly along the Kotagiri-Mettupalayam highway, seeing them near Valley View was unusual. After a post-mortem examination, a forest official told The Hindu that the carcass was that of a male aged between 18 and 20 years.

While trying to escape from a leopard, the bison had fallen into a shallow pit and broken its neck. The carcass bore marks of a leopard attack. He added that the animal had been buried nearby.
