Plea against Government order

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Three hereditary archakas of the famed Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple at Khateel in Dakshina Kannada on Friday petitioned the Karnataka High Court against an order of the State Government permitting devotees from other parts of the State to carry the palanquin of Durga during the temple utsav.

The petitioners, Ananthapadmanabha Asranna and two others, said they were hereditary archakas of the temple. It was the custom of the temple to permit devotes from Khateel and nearby areas to carry the palanquin.

However, on April 17, 2006, the office of the Commissioner for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments issued an order permitting devotees from other parts of the country to carry the palanquin. They said some of the devotees had taken advantage of the order and carried the palanquin. They urged the court to stay the April 17 order. Justice Anand Byrareddy adjourned further hearing.
