KOZHIKODE: The police conducted raids in Valam and Parachalil areas under the Kuttiyadi police station limits here on Friday in a bid to nab those behind the forcible release of an accused from the police station on Wednesday. Prince Abraham, Circle Inspector, Nadapuram, who led the raids from 5.30 a.m. to 6.45 a.m. said search was conducted at five houses. No arrest was made. All the accused were at large, he said. He denied allegations raised by the district committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that a few women were injured during the raids. On Thursday, the Kuttiyadi police registered cases against 35 activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and district panchayat president K.P. Kunhahamedkutty on charges of forcibly releasing an accused from the police station. The accused, P. Lineesh, a CPI(M) activist, was arrested by the police for attacking a police constable, Shaji, of the Kuttiyadi station, in November. The police said Lineesh attacked the constable during a CPI(M) agitation at the Krishi Bhavan at Velam when the constable tried to release the staff who were illegally detained by the CPI(M) activists. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) activists staged a hunger strike at Kuttiyadi town on Friday in protest against the police action. K.K. Lathika, MLA, inaugurated the protest. The CPI(M) has also decided to intensify its agitation demanding the suspension of the Sub-Inspector of the Kuttiyadi station. The party has called for a protest march to the station on Saturday. Mr. Kunhahamedkutty alleged that the police had framed false cases against the DYFI activists.
