KOCHI: The construction sector should be provided the status of an industry to bring in discipline, A.C. Jose, State president of the Building and Road Workers’ Federation, has said. He was addressing a press meet here on Friday. Mr. Jose said a number of demands of construction and road workers that had been accepted by the Union government were pending with the State. Increasing the pension to Rs.500 a month from Rs.300 was one of them. Parity of wages for union and non-union workers was another, Mr. Jose said. He spoke about the miserable conditions of workers from other States at various construction sites. Mr. Jose said the trade union should be active in providing a solution to workers’ problems rather than taking up contract for supplying workers. These and other issues will be discussed at the federation’s State council meeting at A.J. Hall, Kaloor, on Sunday. V.C. Antony Baby, State general secretary; P.M. Mohammed Hanif, State secretary general; and K.S. Xavier, State treasurer, attended the press meet.
